Fort Report: Groome impresses in spring start
Here are Thursday's minor league notes:
- SoxProspects.com Director of Scouting Ian Cundall got a close-up look at top pitching prospect Jason Groome during his start in a Low-A game. Included in the story is a video of the young left-hander in action. Groome allowed just one baserunner in 2 2/3 innings of work, striking out two. Cundall also scouted Mike Shawaryn, Yorvin Pantoja, Mitchell Osnowitz, and Ramfis Berroa.
- SoxProspects.com Managing Editor Matt Huegel sat down with 2016 second round draft pick and shortstop, C.J. Chatham (pictured, right). The 21-year-old Florida Atlantic product discussed where he hopes to play defensively and touched on the adjustments he made in Lowell that saw him finish the season on a .303/.378/.530 tear.
- The Red Sox optioned Steve Selsky to Triple-A Pawtucket on Monday after giving him a long look this spring. The club also reassigned right-hander Kyle Kendrick, who has impressed this spring, and lefty Edgar Olmos to minor league camp.
- Just as the Opening Day roster appeared to be solidified, Josh Rutledge suffered a hamstring injury and will likely start the year on the disabled list. Marco Hernandez would be the logical choice to fill his spot, according to Tim Britton of the Providence Journal.
- That's not all. With reports of Mitch Moreland suffering from flu-like symptoms, Selsky may be summoned back to the big league club thanks to some minor league experience at first base, according to Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe.
- Abraham also chatted with Cole Sturgeon about his experience coming up to big league camp to play in occasional major league games this spring.
- The following minor league players (not on the 40-man or a non-roster invitee to major league camp) saw action in major league games this Monday through Wednesday: Jose Rosario, Mike Miller, Joseph Monge, Tate Matheny, Bobby Dalbec, Kyri Washington, Deiner Lopez, Cole Sturgeon, Chad De La Guerra, Jantzen Witte, Ryan Court, and Lorenzo Cedrola.
