Hill among four Spinners selected to NY-Penn All-Star game
Four Spinners were selected to participate in the New York-Penn League All-Star game, led by the league’s leading hitter, Tyler Hill. Hill’s outfield companion, Matt McLean, joins him on the North team's roster, as well as shortstop Carlos Tovar and relief pitcher Kuehl McEachern.
Hill (pictured, right) is arguably the league’s most deserving All-Star, sporting a slash line of .365/.435/.532 and leading the league in average, OBP, and OPS. Hill’s success has extended to all areas of his game. He has posted an OPS over .950 against both left- and right-handed pitchers and has struck out just 28 times in 42 games. The breakout season comes after a slow first two years of professional ball for the 2014 19th-round pick.
McLean, who was drafted in the ninth round of the 2016 draft, has been a table-setter for Lowell, thanks to his sharp eye and speed on the bases. McLean owns a .385 OBP, which is second on the team, and has not been caught in six stolen base attempts. The outfielder also has four triples.
After missing much of 2015 with an injury, Tovar has turned in a strong 2016 campaign for Lowell. While playing solid defensively, the shortstop has put up a .310/.336/.414 line. While the arrival of Red Sox 2016 second-rounder CJ Chatham cut into his reps, it has not affected Tovar’s bat; he has hit .375 with five multi-hit games over the last 10 contests.
McEachern, who is now on the Salem Red Sox after being promoted twice this season, dominated in 11 games with the Spinners. He posted a 0.36 ERA and allowed just one run in 25 innings while striking out 25 and walking just four. McEachern struggled in his time with Greenville but tossed a scoreless inning in his first appearance with Salem on Sunday.
