Cup of Coffee: Holt doubles twice in first rehab appearance

6/21 Cup of Coffee: It was a bit of a quiet night on the farm as Portland had an off day while Salem and Greenville are at the All-Star break. Brock Holt had a successful rehab appearance, Sean O'Sullivan (pictured) had his best start of the year, and Lowell came back to tie their game in the bottom of the ninth before winning it in extra innings. The second DSL squad won a pair of games yesterday, while the first squad blew a late lead as they dropped to 8-5.

Pawtucket Red Sox 4, Syracuse Chiefs (WAS) 1
Brock Holt did not miss a beat in his first game since May 18, and Sean O'Sullivan stifled the Chiefs to lead the PawSox. O'Sullivan went the first eight innings, allowing one run on seven hits, striking out four without walking a batter. Kyle Martin picked up his fourth save with a scoreless ninth, and he now has 40 strikeouts in only 32 1/3 innings.

Holt went 2 for 3 with two doubles before he was replaced in left field by Bryce Brentz, and his performance was topped only by Ryan Court, who went 3 for 4 with a triple and two RBI in his first Triple-A appearance. Rusney Castillo went 1 for 4 with a stolen base in his first game since clearing waivers, and Chris Dominguez added a triple and an RBI.

A late rally kept the Spinners undefeated, as they scored two in the ninth and one in the 10th to beat the Crosscutters. Kevin Steen had an impressive season debut, tossing five shutout innings while walking two and striking out five. Steen struggled with his command with the Spinners last season, and the two walks over five innings is a step in the right direction for the 19-year-old right-hander. Daniel Zandona allowed one run in the game in his 2 2/3 innings, and Dioscar Romero followed with 2 1/3 innings of one-run ball.

The Spinners were down 2-0 in the bottom of the ninth, and after Tyler Hill hit a leadoff single, Roldani Baldwin doubled him home to cut the lead in half. Chris Madera pinch-ran for Baldwin, and he came in to score on a single from Ryan Scott. In the tenth, Nick Lovullo reached on an error and then scored the winning run on a single from Hill.

The bullpen blew a four-run lead as the first Red Sox squad lost a tough one in extra innings. Ritzi Mendoza twirled a third straight strong start, allowing one run over the first five innings, walking two and striking out five. He has now allowed only two runs over his first 15 innings while striking out 14. Oddanier Mosqueda and Carlos Cortes had rough appearances out of the bullpen, combining to allow six runs over their 4 1/3 innings.

Eight different players had at least one hit, with Jose Caraballo's lone hit being a home run, while Raymond Lopez went 2 for 4 with a triple, two walks, three steals, and three runs driven in. Freddy Fermin also reached base four times with two hits and two walks, and Cristian Perez went 2 for 4 with a walk.

In the completion of a suspended game from June 7, the second Red Sox squad was able to outlast the second Rangers squad in extra innings. The game resumed in the second inning, with Ryan Oduber taking the hill and firing five shutout innings, surrendering only one hit while striking out four. Victor Familia earned the victory with two scoreless innings, as he scattered four hits and struck out two.

Eduard Conde's four hits led the 16-hit attack, while Fabian Andrade went 3 for 5 with a double and three RBI. Reinaldo Ugueto also had three hits and Pedro Castellanos went 2 for 6 with a triple and two runs scored.

The offense picked up right where it left off, while the pitching was getting in and out of trouble all game. Bryan Mata gave up 10 hits, but only let in two runs over four innings thanks to five strikeouts and an outfield assist from Keibert Petit.

After a slow start to the season, Albert Guaimaro had one of his best starts of the year, going 2 for 3 with two doubles, two RBI, and a walk. Antonio Pineiro went 2 for 4 and scored three times, and Ronaldo Pulgar went 1 for 4 with a double.

Player of the Night: With pitching depth becoming more crucial by the day for the Red Sox, Sean O'Sullivan put his best foot forward last night, giving up only one run over eight innings. After giving up 10 earned runs in 11 1/3 innings with the Red Sox this season, O'Sullivan has been inconsistent since being outrighted to Pawtucket, mixing in some very good starts with some poor starts. He was dialed in last night, and he dropped his ERA to 3.09 with the PawSox.
