Michael Chavis placed on disabled list with torn thumb ligament (UPDATE: report rescinded)
UPDATE: Speier has rescinded the report upon which this post was based, citing a misunderstanding with his source.
Per the Boston Globe's Alex Speier, third baseman Michael Chavis (pictured), who is ranked 11th in the SoxProspects.com rankings, has torn a ligament in his thumb. The injury occurred Saturday night in Greenville's loss to the Columbia Fireflies, when Chavis left after just two at-bats. Chavis will undergo an MRI to determine whether or not he will need surgery.

The Red Sox made Chavis their first-round draft pick in 2014. Chavis played all of last season in Low-A Greenville, slashing just .223/.277/.405 and striking out at a 30.6% rate. However, he did lead Red Sox minor leaguers with 16 home runs and his isolated power of .182 was impressive for a 19-year old in his first taste of full-season ball.
After such a trying season in Greenville, the Red Sox opted to keep Chavis in the South Atlantic League to start the 2016 season. Chavis entered the year with high hopes for a rebound season after making some adjustments in the offseason. To this point, Chavis had been making good on that optimism, slashing .356/.415/.576 and cutting his strikeout rate to 15.4% through his first 15 games of the season.
With the possibility of surgery in play, there is no timetable for Chavis' return. Greenville has placed him on the seven-day disabled list.
