Fall/Winter League Roundup: Vazquez swinging it well in Puerto Rican League
Dominican Professional Baseball League
Marco Hernandez (pictured) went 5 for 21 with a double, two runs, and two RBI this past week at shortstop for Licey. Aneury Tavarez followed up a nice week by going 3 for 11 with a double.
Roman Mendez was the only Red Sox pitcher to appear in the Dominican League last week. He made two appearances and tossed 2 1/3 scoreless frames, allowing two hits along the way.
Once again, it was a very quiet week in the Venezuelan League for Red Sox players. Sandy Leon was the lone player to see action, going 3 for 17 with a double, two walks, two runs, and an RBI.
Christian Vazquez hit the ball well, going 5 for 12 with two doubles and two RBI as the team's designated hitter. He has put together a solid winter, batting .283/.312/.338 in 74 at-bats. Jeremy Rivera pinch-ran twice and pinch-hit once, going 0 for 1. Pat Light also made an appearance, tossing a scoreless inning with one walk, one strikeout, and one hit allowed.
Venezuelan Liga Paralela
Boston's team was swept in a best-of-three semifinal series as the Venezuelan development program entered its playoffs. In the two losses, Boston's offense was highlighted by Raiwinson Lameda, who went 3 for 7 with three runs, an RBI, and two walks. Juan Barriento went 3 for 8 with two doubles, Imeldo Diaz went 3 for 7 with a walk, and Lorenzo Cedrola went 2 for 5 with an RBI.
On the mound, Hildemaro Requena and Eduard Bazardo made the starts. Requena got roughed up, going four innings and allowing seven hits and five runs. Bazardo was better, giving up seven hits in four innings but allowing just one earned run. Alejandro Rodriguez, Carlos Garcia, and Ritzi Mendoza each tossed a scoreless inning in relief.
Deiner Lopez played well for Lara in the other semifinal, going 6 for 15 with two runs and a walk out of the leadoff spot. Lara won that series two games to one, and entered Monday tied with Magallanes at one game apiece in the final, with the rubber game being played today. Lopez is 1 for 8 so far in the series.
