Fall/Winter League Roundup: Travis leads the way for Scottsdale
Arizona Fall League
Sam Travis (pictured, right) remained hot, going 5 for 11 with a double and three RBI in three games this week. The 22-year-old first baseman also took part in the AFL Fall Stars game on Saturday, entering the game as a pinch hitter for the AFL East squad, walking and scoring a run in his first plate appearance and striking out in the other. The West Stars defeated the East Stars, 8-3. Travis is hitting .328/.394/.448 in 14 games this fall.
Carlos Asuaje had a nice week, going 6 for 11 with two runs scored, bringing his fall average up to .318 in 11 games. Tzu-Wei Lin did not fare as well, going just 1 for 12 with two RBI in his three appearances.
On the mound, Justin Haley made his second start of the Fall on Thursday, hurling three innings, allowing an unearned run on three hits, striking out four, in a no-decision. Kyle Martin tossed 3 1/3 innings of relief, allowing a run on three hits in two appearances. Danny Rosenbaum also appeared in two contests, picking up the win on Thursday, despite allowing a run on two hits in his lone inning of work. Chandler Shepherd earned the save in Friday's contest, pitching a perfect inning of relief, striking out two.
Edwin Escobar made his third start of the offseason, taking the loss, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits in 4 1/3 innings. Jorge Marban, who re-signed with the organization before hitting minor league free agency last week, made his offseason debut, appearing in two games, allowing a run on a hit and two walks in 1 1/3 innings. The recently signed Rob Wort was busy this week, appearing in four contests, hurling 4 1/3 innings, allowing a run on four hits, striking out seven. Sandy Leon, who accepted an outright assignment to Pawtucket earlier this week, was 4 for 9 with three walks and two runs scored in his four games this week.
Raiwinson Lameda led the way this week, going 7 for 15 with two walks and a hit-by-pitch and five RBI on the week for a .467/.556/.467 line, leading the Boston entry to a 4-1 record. Fresh after making his debut in the circuit last week, Lorenzo Cedrola had the club's other strong offensive performance, going 7 for 15 with two doubles, two walks, and two hit-by-pitches, good for a .417/.563/.583 line, scoring twice and driving in another run.
On the mound, Carlos Garcia allowed just two hits in four innings of work in relief on Wednesday to pick up the victory. Ritzi Mendoza continued to pitch well, allowing just two hits and punching out four in two innings of relief, earning the save in Friday's game. Angel Padron pitched well in his lone start, scattering six hits and a walk in five shutout innings.
Elsewhere in the league, catcher Alixon Suarez has been playing multiple positions for the Cardenales, and he went 5 for 15 with a double and a triple for the week. Ramses Rosario continued his strong campaign on the mound for the Bravos, allowing two unearned runs on two hits over seven innings, striking out seven in his lone start. The outing brought his ERA down to 0.68, as he has allowed 20 hits and 4 walks in 26 1/3 innings, striking out 26.
Dominican Professional Baseball League
Marco Hernandez led the way for Licey, going 5 for 12 with three RBI and two runs scored in his three games this week. Manuel Margot was just 2 for 11 with an RBI while Rafael Devers made his first appearance since October 28, going 0 for 2 in his lone game.
Jonathan Aro made his debut for Licey, appearing in two games, picking up the victory on Friday as he tossed a scoreless inning of relief. Roman Mendez appeared in three games, allowing a run on four hits and three walks in 2 2/3 innings of relief.
Venezuelan Professional Baseball League

Christian Vazquez saw action in three games, going 2 for 11. Henry Ramos played the most of any prospect this week, going 4 for 18 with a double and three RBI in five games played. Jeremy Rivera made his debut, going 2 for 7 with two runs scored in three contests.
Pat Light remained unblemished, tossing two innings of scoreless relief.
WBSC Premier12 Tournament
The inaugural Premier12 Tournament began play on Sunday. The World Baseball Softball Confederation, which formed from the merger of the International Baseball Federation and International Softball Federation in the aftermath of the two sports being eliminated from the Olympics, will hold the tournament every four years as its flagship competition, pitting the top 12-ranked teams in the worlds against each other. Three Red Sox players will participate in the tournament: pitchers Aaron Wilkerson (who Justin Haley presumably replaced in the Arizona Fall League for this reason) for the United States and outfielder Aneury Tavarez for the Dominican Republic. You can follow the tournament at http://wbsc.org/en/tournaments/2015-premier12. The U.S. and Dominican teams will square off in each team's first game on Tuesday
