Fall/Winter League Roundup: Travis blasts walk-off home run
This week's roundup covers play from the period of November 9-15. For the full list of Red Sox prospects participating in offseason action, check out our Fall and Winter Leagues page, which will be updated continuously through the end of the offseason.
Arizona Fall League
With Carlos Asuaje being traded in the Craig Kimbrel trade, the Red Sox lost one position player participating in the league, but they added Jamie Callahan (pictured) to Scottsdale's roster, with the former second-round pick making two appearances out of the bullpen last week. He went one inning in each appearance, giving up a total of one run on one hit and one walk while notching a strikeout.
The big play of the week came on Monday, when Sam Travis stepped to the plate with two runners on and his team down by one in the bottom of the ninth. He connected for his first home run of the fall league for the walk-off victory. He finished the week going 6 for 22 with the home run, two doubles, and five runs batted in. He also struck out four times while drawing a walk. He is currently 10th in the league with a .313 batting average, while his .371 on-base percentage ranks 15th.
Tzu-Wei Lin performed well in limited playing time last week, going 5 for 11 with three runs scored, one walk, and two strikeouts. Chandler Shepherd earned a victory with two innings of scoreless ball, giving up one hit while striking out four and walking three. Justin Haley continued to pitch well, allowing one run on five hits, with a walk and a strikeout, with the run being the first one he has surrendered over 10 innings for Scottsdale. Danny Rosenbaum did not allow a run in his two innings of work, striking out two.
Dominican Professional Baseball League
It was the best week yet for Rafael Devers, as he went 5 for 16, with a double, two walks, and four runs batted in. The 19-year-old is holding his own as one of the youngest players in the league. Marco Hernandez was at the opposite end of the spectrum, going 1 for 18 with six strikeouts and one walk. Free-agent Carlos Peguero continued to showcase his all-or-nothing approach, going 3 for 16 with nine strikeouts, but one of those hits being a three-run home run.
Jonathan Aro was dominant out of the bullpen, with five of his nine outs last week coming via strikeout. He did not allow a baserunner over his three appearances. Roman Mendez also had a solid week, allowing one run over four innings with four hits and two walks, while recording only one strikeout.
Roberto Clemente Professional Baseball League (Puerto Rico)
Some disappointing news came out last week, as the Red Sox announced that Travis Shaw was going to be shut down for the rest of the offseason due to a shoulder impingement. It should be a short-term injury, but it looks like Shaw is done with baseball activities for the year after an impressive rookie season.
Getting by far the most playing time of any Red Sox prospect in the league, Henry Ramos went 2 for 17 with two doubles, three walks, and four strikeouts. Jeremy Rivera went 0 for 3 with three strikeouts and a walk in his limited playing time, and Pat Light picked up his first win after tossing 1 2/3 innings of one-run ball, walking two and striking out two.
Venezuelan Professional Baseball League
The Red Sox prospects saw limited action last week, but a couple of free agents who were in the system last year did a good job of helping their cause. Carlos Rivero went 6 for 18 with a home run, double, two walks, and three strikeouts, and Luis Diaz allowed only one run over 5 2/3 innings in his lone start of the week.
Edwin Escobar struggled with his control, walking five in 4 1/3 innings, but he was able to escape without allowing a run. Luis Ysla struck out one over 1 2/3 scoreless innings, Jorge Marban did not allow a run in his only inning of work, and Rob Wort gave up one hit and one walk while recording one out in his only appearance.
WBSC Premier12 Tournament
Aneury Tavarez was the only player to see the field last week, going 5 for 22 with seven strikeouts for the Dominican Republic. The tournament wraps up on November 21, with the Dominican Republic already being eliminated after losing each of the first five games. The United States made it to the quarterfinals, where Aaron Wilkerson will look to help them advance despite not appearing in a game this week.
Venezuelan Liga Paralela
The Boston squad split its four games this week, as the team remained in first place in Division C with a 20-6 record. Hemerson Serven went for 5 for 11 with two runs driven in, and Ramfis Berroa went 6 for 17 with a double, two runs scored, a stolen base, and three RBI.
Luis Alexander Basabe was on base five times in nine plate appearances, going 2 for 6 with three walks and three runs scored, and Victor Acosta reached base in each of his three plate appearances, going 2 for 2 with a walk and two runs scored.
Yankory Pimentel’s league debut was certainly one to forget, as he faced four batters, walking three and hitting one. Hildemaro Requena had the most impressive performance last week, picking up a win with five shutout innings, allowing only one hit while striking out three. Junior Espinoza was roughed up for four runs on five hits and three walks in his four innings, while Eduard Bazardo picked up a loss after allowing two runs on three and two walks over five innings.
