Weekly Notes: Front office moves, Fall Instructs rosters announced

Here are this week's minor league notes:

  • With the minor league season over for the Red Sox, SoxProspects.com recently confirmed their Fall Instructional League rosters. The most notable names on the roster include Andrew Benintendi, Yoan Moncada, and Anderson Espinoza. The first game will be on September 22 against the Rays.
  • The Red Sox also made some moves in the front office last week. Brian Bannister was named Director of Pitching Analysis and Development, Chris Mears will be the Pitching Crosschecker, and Gus Quattlebaum was named Director of Professional Scouting.
  • Episode 85 of the SoxProspects.com podcast also came out this past week. Chris Hatfield, Ian Cundall, and Chaz Fiorino talked about reports from Pawtucket and Salem. They also reviewed the September rankings, and Hatfield interviewed Salem second baseman Wendell Rijo.
  • Scott Lauber of The Boston Herald wrote a piece about Moncada and how he is a "star in the making." David Hastings and Ben Crockett weighed in on the Cuban's first season as well.
  • Annie Maroon of MassLive.com wrote an article about Manuel Margot (pictured) and the difference between Single-A and Double-A. He's had to make a lot of adjustments on and off the field at just 20 years of age. He heated up at the end of the year and finished with a .271/.326/.419 slash line and 19 stolen bases for Portland. He is close to four-and-a-half years younger than the average Eastern League player.
  • Alex Speier of The Boston Globe wrote a piece wrapping up the minor league season and detailed some of the top performers in the Red Sox system.
  • On MLBPipeline.com, Moncada was named the second baseman on the site's "Prospect Team of the Year," writes Jim Callis.
  • Several Red Sox farmhands found their way onto Baseball America's Classification All-Star Teams, headlined by Espinoza, who was the Rookie-level Pitcher of the Year. Others selected included PawSox outfielder Jackie Bradley and left-hander Brian Johnson, Moncada, and Benintendi.
  • Kevin Thomas of The Portland Press Herald recapped the Sea Dogs' 2015 season that ended in disappointment for the team. However, Hadlock Field still drew some impressive crowds, and the team had a few bright spots including Marco Hernandez, Sam Travis, and Manuel Margot.
  • Tim Britton of The Providence Journal wrote about how PawSox manager Kevin Boles is excited for a chance to be on the Major League coaching staff with Boston to close out 2015. He went through a tough season in Pawtucket, but a lot of the guys that started the year with Pawtucket moved on to Boston in the middle of the season.
  • Third Baseman Rafael Devers was the number one pick in the Dominican League rookie draft. Others selected, per Baseball America, included left-hander Williams Jerez and right-handers Mario Alcantara, Jeffry Fernandez, and Carlos Pinales.
  • Some Red Sox minor league system personnel are leaving, including PawSox VP/GM Lou Schwechheimer, Spinners assistant GM Jon Boswell, and Spinners clubhouse attendant Del "Dogman" Christman.
  • Jonathan Aro, Matt Barnes, and Rich Hill were added to the Red Sox roster on Tuesday. Hill, who made appearances with Boston from 2010-2012, made his first start in six years at the Major League level on Sunday at Tampa Bay. He tossed seven shutout innings, allowing one hit and striking out 10 in the Red Sox win in 13 innings. He posted a 2.78 ERA in 32 1/3 innings for Pawtucket this year.
