Cup of Coffee: Benintendi remains hot, Hernandez impressive for DSL Sox
8/22 Cup of Coffee: Greenville, The GCL Sox, and the DSL Red Sox2 all picked up victories on Friday night, helping them in their playoff battles. Salem dropped its seventh straight while Portland and the DSL Red Sox1 also dropped their contests. Pawtucket was boosted by a solid pitching performance and the Spinners were rained out.

Rick Porcello continued his rehab assignment, allowing three runs on three hits, striking out six, in 5 2/3 innings of work. Porcello retired the last 13 hitters he faced, including striking out five of the last six. Jorge Marban relieved Porcello and hurled 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, allowing one hit and striking out four, picking up his second win of the season.
With the PawSox finding themselves in a 3-0 hole in the second, Humberto Quintero's solo home run put Pawtucket on the board, 3-1. In the fifth, a Sandy Leon RBI single pulled the PawSox to within one. In the sixth, the PawSox plated four runs on RBI singles from Deven Marrero, Carlos Rivero, and Allen Craig. An additional run came home on a throwing error, allowing Pawtucket to open up a comfortable 7-3 advantage. 8 out of the 9 members of the PawSox starting lineup collected at least one hit, with Marrero, Leon, Quintero, Jonathan Roof, and Jeff Bianchi all having multi hit games.

Luis Diaz fell to 1-10 on the season, allowing six runs on four hits and four walks in 4 1/3 innings. Heri Quevedo did not fare much better, allowing five runs (three earned) on five hits and two walks in 2 1/3 innings of work. Oscar Tejeda and Aneury Tavarez were both 2 for 3 with two runs scored and a solo home run. Carlos Asauje added an RBI triple and Jordan Weems plated two with an RBI double.

Teddy Stankiewicz fell to 3-11, as he allowed seven runs on on seven hits in 4 2/3 innings of work. Kyle Kraus pitched well in his 3 1/3 innings of relief, allowing just two hits and a walk. The Red Sox got off to a quick start in this one, plating three runs in the first inning on RBI singles from Cole Sturgeon, Forrest Allday, and Zach Kapstein. Salem would not score again until the eighth, when they added two runs on a Mike Meyers RBI double and a Kapstein RBI ground out. With the loss, Salem has now dropped seven straight and are just 17-36 in the second half.

Every member of the Greenville starting lineup had at least one hit as the Drive pounded out 16 hits as they doubled up Delmarva 10-5. Dedgar Jimenez picked up the victory, hurling six innings, allowing three runs on nine hits and a walk. Jake Drehoff added an inning of scoreless relief. Edwar Garcia allowed two runs on two hits and a walk in his two innings out of the bullpen.

In the third, an RBI double from Michael Chavis, an RBI single from Andrew Benintendi (pictured, above), and an RBI ground out from Nick Longhi, gave the Drive a 5-2 advantage. Greenville tacked on two more in the fourth on a sacrifice fly from Chavis and an RBI double from Rafael Devers. The Drive capped their scoring in the seventh, plating three on RBI singles from Monge and Lorenzana, in addition to an RBI ground out from David Sopilka. Lorenzana and Benintendi led the offense with three hits apiece. The Drive remain a game and a half behind Asheville in the wild card race.

The Spinners-Yankees game was postponed due to rain on Friday. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, scheduled to begin at 4 PM.

A massive eight run seventh inning helped the GCL Sox their fourth victory in a row, as they maintained their seven game lead over the Orioles. The Red Sox can clinch the division on Saturday with a victory or an Orioles loss. Emmanuel De Jesus improved to 6-2 as he hurled five innings, allowing just two hits and a walk, punching out five. Brad Stone and Nick Duron both added two scoreless innings of relief. Jerry Downs was 3 for 5 an RBI and a run scored to lead the Red Sox offense. Andy Perez, Trent Kemp, and Yoan Aybar each added two hits in the victory.

Christopher Acosta fell to 1-4 as he allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits and a walk, striking out five. Nicolo Clemente followed Acosta, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits, punching out three. The Red Sox lone run of the contest came in the first on a run scoring error. The Red Sox were just 1 for 15 with runners in scoring position and committed four errors.

Darwinzon Hernandez improved to 6-1 as he allowed just two hits and two walks, striking out seven, in 6 2/3 innings of work. The 18 year-old left-hander has now compiled an impressive 1.10 ERA 65 1/3 innings this season.

Player of the Night: Darwinzon Hernandez, has been a big part of the DSL Red Sox2 successful season. The 18-year-old left-hander allowed just two hits and two walks, striking out seven in the team's 13-2 victory over the Tigers. In his second professional season, Hernandez has compiled a 1.10 ERA in 16 games (13 starts), striking out 66 in 65.1 innings of work. In six starts in the second half of the year, Hernandez has yet to allow an earned run and has struck out 35 in 29 2/3 innings.
