Weekly Notes: Sox sign 14 draft picks, Spinners begin season
Here are this week's minor league notes:
- The Red Sox signed 14 of their draft picks in the past week. Logan Allen (pictured), the Red Sox eighth round pick, signed for well above slot value at $725,000. However, Boston has saved $506,700 against their draft signing cap, which should make up most of the difference. Six of their top-10 picks have signed so far. SoxProspects.com's Jim Crowell and James Dunne have more on the signings.
- Episode 78 of the SoxProspects.com podcast was released Sunday. Chris Hatfield, Matt Huegel, and Ian Cundall discussed the PawSox and where some of their players stand as we approach July. The Spinners roster was also discussed, along with the GCL season beginning on Monday. They also talked about Xander Bogaerts and Mookie Betts.
- SoxProspects.com's Chaz Fiorino was able to attend three PawSox games from June 12-14 against the Toledo Mud Hens at McCoy Stadium. He highlighted Travis Shaw, Jackie Bradley Jr. and Garin Cecchini. Shaw showed very well, spraying the ball to all fields and showing tremendous improvement at third base, making all kinds of plays (Shaw has since been called up to Boston). Bradley Jr. also had a terrific couple of games, going 4 for 7 at the plate and playing his typical, well above-average defense in center field. Cecchini struggled at the plate, but Fiorino does not believe it's his approach, but his mechanics and timing.
- The Boston Globe's Alex Speier talked with PawSox pitching coach Bob Kipper and discussed Henry Owens and his control problems so far this season.
- The Boston Globe's Andrew MacDougall and Alex Speier wrote about the state of some Red Sox prospects, highlighting players throughout the entire system.
- WEEI.com's Ryan Hannable talked with Greenville Drive manager Darren Fenster about Yoan Moncada, who is getting more and more comfortable with Greenville.
- Brandon Workman underwent successful Tommy John surgery on Monday, performed by Dr. James Andrews.
- Bryce Brentz was placed on the DL Friday, and Jonathan Roof moved from Portland to Pawtucket and Kyle Kaminska moved from Greenville to Salem.
- 17-year old flame throwing right-handed pitcher Anderson Espinoza has been promoted to the GCL.
- At Baseball Prospectus Boston, Chris Teeter wrote about some recent performances from Jackie Bradley Jr., Trey Ball, Manuel Margot, Rafael Devers, and more.

1 G, 1-0, 6 IP, 0 ER, 2 H, 1 BB, 7 K
1 G, 1-0, 6 IP, 0 ER, 2 H, 1 BB, 7 K
Wilkerson (pictured) has been nothing short of dominant in his time with Salem this season. The 26-year old was the SoxProspects.com Pitcher of the Month for May and he has a 1.55 ERA in 40 2/3 innings with Salem. He has also allowed one earned run or fewer in eight of his nine appearances with Salem this season. He's the pitcher of the week, allowing just three base runners and striking out seven in six shutout innings.
Season Stats (Greenville and Salem): 14 G, 3-0, 2.50 ERA, 16 ER, 38 H, 13 BB, 64 K
Carlos Pegeuro, OF, Pawtucket Red Sox
4 G, 18 PA, 8 H, 2 2B, 3 HR, 3 R, 10 RBI, 3 BB, 3 K, .533/.579/1.267
Pegeuro had a short stint in Boston before he was designated for assignment. He took a minor league contract and ever since then he has played extremely well for the PawSox. He only played in four games this week, but he was so good that it was impossible to pass him up for player of the week honors. He blasted three home runs, including a multi-home run ballgame, and went 8 for 15, good for a .533 batting average.
Season Stats: 4 G, 18 PA, 8 H, 2 2B, 3 HR, 3 R, 10 RBI, 3 BB, 3 K, .533/.579/1.267
