Red Sox select Mitchell Gunsolus with their tenth-round pick


With their tenth-round pick, the 291st-overall pick in the 2015 MLB First-Year Player Draft, the Red Sox have selected Mitchell Gunsolus, a third baseman from Gonzaga University.

A senior-sign from the Bulldogs, Gunsolus is described as an offensive-minded left-handed hitter at the hot corner. Listed at 6-feet and 200 pounds, The Kenmore, Wash., native ended his college career with First Team All-WCC honors, setting career highs with a .353/.449/.556 slash line,seven home runs, and 34 RBI. He only struck out 32 times in 207 at-bats. 

Gonsolus found some power in his stroke his senior year, hitting seven home runs after failing to homer in his previous three years. Gunsolus had more walks than strikeouts each of the last three seasons, showing discipline at the plate, with a flat, line-drive swing, per Baseball AmericaThat scouting report also notes Gunsolus' hard hands at third base, where he made 16 errors this season, but that he has the speed and arm to move to the outfield if necessary. Baseball America ranked him at 464 on its Top 500 list.

Gunsolus was a durable player in his college career, starting 156 games in a row before taking an off day on May 12 of this season. He also played for the Chatham Anglers in the Cape Cod League the last two summers. He hit .244 with a home run and 5 RBI in 26 games played for Chatham in 2014.
