Fall/Winter League Roundup: Marrero stays hot in Arizona

This week's roundup covers play from the period of November 3-9. For the full list of Red Sox prospects participating in offseason action, check out our Fall and Winter Leagues page, which will be updated continuously through the end of the offseason.

Arizona Fall League

It was more of the same for both Deven Marrero and Sean Coyle this week, as Marrero continued to swing a hot bat while Coyle struggled. Marrero got at least one hit in each of his three appearances this week, going 4 for 12 with a double, four runs scored, and an RBI. He is currently batting .320, and his .443 on-base percentage is second on the team. Coyle saw his average drop to .164 after collecting only one hit over 10 at-bats this week. Not only is Coyle struggling to make contact, striking out in 36-percent of his at-bats, but he is also not hitting for power, with only two doubles and one triple in 55 at-bats in the friendly offensive environment.

Mike Miller, who was added to Surprise after Rusney Castillo was deactivated, went 0 for 11 in his first three games with the Saguaros. It was a tough week on the pitching side, with all four pitchers struggling to various degrees. Keith Couch allowed three runs over four innings in his only start, serving up his second home run of the fall and striking out three. Aaron Kurcz allowed one run over 1 1/3 innings of relief, surrendering two hits and two walks, and Madison Younginer gave up two runs on three hits in one inning of work. Robby Scott (pictured) had the most success, allowing only one run in 2 2/3 innings over two appearances.

Dominican Baseball League

There were some mixed performances this week, with Aneury Tavarez representing one of the successes, collecting three hits in seven at-bats while driving in two runs. Miguel Celestino made a brief appearance, facing two batters and allowing a hit while notching a strikeout, and Heri Quevedo also had a scoreless appearance, but he allowed three baserunners and needed to escape a jam. Jose Vinicio appeared in one game this week, going 0 for 3 at the plate, and he now has only one hit in nine at-bats.

Venezuelan Professional Baseball League

Edwin Escobar tossed a shutout inning in his first appearance this week, but he was not able to record an out in his second appearance, allowing two run on two hits and a walk. William Cuevas did not fare any better, allowing four runs in only one inning on Saturday.

Venezuelan Liga Paralela

Boston's affiliate went 2-2-1 this week. Ellis Jimenez tossed 4 2/3 innings of shutout relief in the first win of the week, and Ritzy Mendoza threw three shutout innings in the second win. Victor Acosta continues to pace the offense, as his line now sits at .351/.422/.474 while playing both third base and outfield. Carlos Tovar saw his average drop 76 points this week, down to .268, but his .451 slugging percentage is still second on the team behind Acosta.

Roberto Clemente Professional Baseball League (Puerto Rico)

Only a trio of players got into game action this week, led by Dayan Diaz, who threw two perfect innings with one strikeout in his one appearance. Joseph Monge went 0 for 3 with two strikeouts, and Henry Ramos 1 for 11 with a walk.

Colombian Professional Baseball League

Details are spotty because the league's website does not yet have statistics, but Sergio Gomez got the start on Saturday in Cartagena's second game of the season, taking the loss.
