Fall/Winter League Roundup: Rivero, Castillo make early impressions


This week's roundup covers play from the period of October 13-19. For the full list of Red Sox prospects participating in off-season action, check out our Fall & Winter Leagues page, which will be updated continuously through January. 

Arizona Fall League

Rusney Castillo continued to do well at the plate, going 5 for 19 with two doubles and an RBI. After seven games, Castillo is hitting .294/.351/.382 with three doubles and stellar defensive play in center field for Surprise.

Deven Marrero appeared in four games this week, going 2 for 13 with three walks. Marrero is currently hitting .217/.379/.217 through seven contests. Marrero's infield partner, Sean Coyle appeared in only three games, going 2 for 10 with a double. 

On the mound this week, Keith Couch received the start against Salt River on Tuesday, hurling five innings, allowing just five hits and striking out two in a no decision. Aaron Kurcz appeared in two games out of the bullpen, collecting a save in a clean inning against Scottsdale on Tuesday. Kurcz allowed three unearned runs on two hits on Saturday against Glendale. Madison Younginer bounced back after a rough outing last week to throw a scoreless inning of relief against Scottsdale on Thursday. Robby Scott also saw in action in the Thursday contest against Scottsdale, allowing a run on two hits and a walk in two innings of relief.

Dominican Winter League

Dominican Winter League action kicked off this week. Aneury Tavarez, playing for las Estrellas, went 0 for 3 with a walk and a run scored in his debut on Saturday. Jose Vinicio made his debut for Escogido on Friday, going 1 for 4 with a stolen base and a run scored. Manuel Margot has appeared in two games for Este as a defensive replacement. On the pitching side, Jose Valdez threw an inning of relief against Este on Thursday, allowing a run on one hit. 

Venezuelan Winter League

Mario Martinez appeared in just one game this week, going 0 for 3 with a pair of strikeouts. Heiker Meneses went 1 for 7 with an RBI in three games this week. The infielder is now hitting .125/.263/.125 through seven games. Carlos Rivero (pictured) continued to wield a hot bat for Lara, going 10 for 23 with three home runs, six RBI and six runs scored this week. Rivero is now hitting .351/.429/.676 with four home runs, and eight RBI through ten games.

On the mound, Wilfredo Boscan made a start on Wednesday against Caracas, allowing two runs on three hits in five innings, punching out five. 

Venezuelan Liga Paralela:

The amount of players participating in Liga Paralela for the Boston squad increased this week from 13 to 21. Players of note at the plate include David Sopilka who is hitting .320/.433/.640 with two home runs and Juan Herandnez, who is hitting .357/.438/.429. 

While innings on the mound have been limited, Carlos Caceres has a 1.29 ERA and six strikeouts in seven innings of work. Ellis Jimenez is also doing well, holding a 1.12 ERA through eight innings most in relief.
