Barnes promoted to Boston
The Red Sox announced earlier this afternoon that the team had called up right-hander Matt Barnes from Triple-A Pawtucket. To make room on the 40-man roster for Barnes, the team placed outfielder Shane Victorino on the 60-day disabled list.
Barnes, who was scheduled to pitch game two of the International League Finals for Pawtucket against Durham on Wednesday, will pitch out of the bullpen for the Red Sox. The 24-year-old right-hander needed to be added to the 40-man roster this offseason, so the move is aimed at giving Barnes major league exposure this season.
Standing at 4-7 with a 5.06 ERA at the All-Star break, Barnes made some adjustments and compiled a 4-2 record, posting a 2.38 ERA in eight starts during the second half of the season.
The 2011 first round pick out of the University of Connecticut has almost exclusively worked as a starter throughout the course of his minor league career, with the exception of a three inning relief appearance on June 15th against the Charlotte Knights (CHW). On that evening, Barnes did not allow a run, allowing just three hits while striking out a pair.
SoxProspects.com scout Chaz Fiorino was in attendance for Barnes' August 30 start and shared his thoughts in The Write-Up.
