Cup of Coffee: Margot carries Greenville over Rome

8/13 Cup of Coffee: Greenville, GCL and the DSL Sox all brought home wins Tuesday. Three more games were lost due to rain while Pawtucket and Portland both lost one run contests.

A close back-and-forth contest in the later innings broke in favor of Gwinnett, despite solid pitching from PawSox starter Steven Wright. The right-hander tossed a complete game, allowing four runs (three earned) on nine hits and a walk, striking out two. The Braves, who trailed 3-1 going into the eighth inning, took advantage of a key fielding error by Deven Marrero to rally for three runs in the eighth to take the lead.

Pawtucket was relatively quiet with the bat, outside of Mookie Betts, who collected two singles and two RBI in his latest multi-hit game. Garin Cecchini added a solo home run in the ninth as he had another multi-hit evening, continuing his recent hot streak at the plate.

Despite another solid outing from Brian Johnson, the Sea Dogs bullpen faltered in the late innings as they lost their series opener. Johnson hurled six innings, allowing one run on four hits and two walks as he struck out five. The left-hander has now allowed one run or less in nine of his last 10 outings. Robby Scott allowed two runs on three hits and a walk in his lone inning of relief. Noe Ramirez blew his third save of the season, picking up his first loss, allowing two runs on four hits in a shaky ninth inning.

Michael Almanzar smacked a three-run home run in the third inning that gave the Sea Dogs an early 3-0 lead. In the sixth, Keury De La Cruz added an RBI double, giving Portland a 4-1 advantage. De La Cruz and Stefan Welch each had three hits to lead the Sea Dogs offense.

Amazingly, the scheduled doubleheader between Salem and the Potomac Nationals was postponed once again due to rain. This marks the fourth straight rain out between the two squads, including three straight doubleheaders. The two teams will hopefully square off this evening in a doubleheader starting at 5 PM.

Solid work in all phases of the game allowed Greenville to easily defeat Rome, 8-1. Teddy Stankiewicz improved to 9-7, hurling seven innings, allowing one run on four hits and a walk, punching out seven. Oscar Perez added two flawless innings of relief in the victory.

The Drive pounded out 14 hits, including a two run home run off the bat of Tzu-Wei Lin, his first of the 2014 season. Every member of the Greenville starting lineup had at least one hit, with Manuel Margot (pictured, above) leading the team with a 3 for 4 evening from atop the order. Margot fell a home run short of the cycle, scoring two runs, driving in a pair and adding a walk. Cole Sturgeon, Danny Bethea, and Tim Roberson each collected two hits in the win.

The opening tilt of a three game series between the Spinners and Brooklyn Cyclones was postponed due to rain. The two teams will play a doubleheader this evening beginning at 6:30 PM.

A day after losing to the Orioles, the Red Sox held back their foes thanks to strong pitching. Michael Kopech received the start for the GCL squad, tossing three scoreless innings, allowing a walk and striking out two. Javier Rodriguez improved to 7-0 as he added four scoreless innings of relief, allowing five hits and a walk while striking out five.

The Red Sox plated both of their runs on RBI ground outs. Getting one each in the sixth and the seventh from Derek Miller and Jeremy Rivera

Like their GCL counterparts, the DSL Red Sox avenged their loss to the Orioles a day prior by forging a late rally. Jhonathan Diaz received the start for the Red Sox, allowing three runs on four hits and two walks in five innings of work. Alejandro Rodriguez failed to record an out as he allowed two runs on two hits and a walk. Algenis Martinez improved to 6-2 as he tossed four scoreless innings of relief, allowing just two hits while striking out three.

Carlos Tovar was 3 for 4 with a double, RBI and a run scored to lead the Red Sox offense. Luis Alejandro Basabe was 2 for 2 with two runs scored, an RBI and three walks from the top of the order. The Red Sox were just 3 for 14 with runners in scoring position, leaving 12 men on base in the win.

Player of the Day: Manuel Margot, who was 3 for 4 with a double, triple, two RBI, two runs scored and a walk in Greenville's 8-1 victory over Rome. The 19-year-old has been hot in his last ten games, hitting .457 with two home runs, ten RBI and four stolen bases. Margot is currently hitting .285/.354/.448 with ten home runs, 45 RBI and 37 stolen bases this season for the Drive.
