Cup of Coffee: Roberson powers Greenville past Rome


7/16 Cup of Coffee: Tuesday saw just two teams in action, with Greenville having a solid offensive day in a victory and the DSL Sox losing a one run game. The GCL Sox scheduled doubleheader was rained out.

Greenville's bats helped carry them to a 9-4 victory over the Rome Braves (ATL). Jason Garcia tossed 4 1/3 innings allowing three runs on seven hits and three walks, striking out three. Sergio Gomez picked up the victory for his 4 2/3 innings of relief, allowing a run on two hits and three walks, punching out three.

Every single member of the Drive's lineup, including pinch hitter Zach Kapstein, collected at least one hit. Tim Roberson (pictured, above) was 3 for 5 with a home run, double, RBI and two runs scored. Jimmy Rider was 3 for 4 with two RBI and a walk. Manuel Margot stole his 30th base of the season, before leaving the game in the fourth inning.

Greenville collected 16 hits and was 6 for 16 with runners in scoring position, leaving ten men on base. The victory was the Drive's fourth in a row after starting the second half of the season just 3-19.

The doubleheader between the GCL Sox and the GCL Orioles (BAL) was postponed due to rain. The two teams are scheduled for another doubleheader today.

The DSL Red Sox scored five runs in the 11th inning to beat the DSL Nationals (WAS), 8-3. Ritzi Mendoza started the game and went five innings giving up six hits on three runs and two strikeouts.  Carlos Caceres was strong in relief going four innings without giving up a run and striking out three to earn the victory and move his record to 3-0.


Down 3-0 in the fourth, the Red Sox plated their first run on a Gerardo Carrizalez sacrifice fly. After the Nationals plated a run in the fifth, Juan Perez's RBI double brought the Red Sox to within a run.
With the game tied 3-3 in extra innings, Roldani Baldwin launched a three-run home run to help secure the victory.  The DSL Sox are 8-2 in their last ten games and currently are tied for first at 26-13 with the DSL Giants (SF).

Player of the Day: Tim Roberson, who was 3 for 5 with a home run, double, RBI and two runs scored in Greenville's 9-4 victory over Rome. Roberson, 25, has split this season between Salem and Greenville, hitting .226/.292/.341 with six home runs and 42 RBI in 79 games played.
