Cup of Coffee: Pat Light dominates; Devers keeps rolling

7/5 Cup of Coffee: Pawtucket and Greenville fell in walk off fashion, while Lowell picked up the systems only other loss. Portland took both games of a twin bill, Salem rode some strong pitching to the win, and both the GCL and DSL came out on top.

The PawSox were victims of a walk off, falling to the Syracuse Chiefs (WAS), 7-6. Anthony Ranaudo struggled, allowing five runs on seven hits in six innings pitched. It was Drake Britton who took the loss though, allowing one run on two hits and three walks in 1 2/3 innings pitched. Both Travis Shaw and Mike Carp clubbed home runs to pace the PawSox offense. The rehabbing Will Middlebrooks went 0 for 4 with three strikeouts and Deven Marrero went 1 for 3.

Portland shut out the New Britain Rock Cats (MIN) in seven innings, 4-0. Mike McCarthy pitched well over five innings, surrendering only three hits and one walk while striking out five. Robby Scott closed out the game with two innings of scoreless relief, allowing two hits. Seven of nine Sea Dogs picked up hits, with only Michael Almanzar and Keury De La Cruz missing out on the action. Shannon Wilkerson collected two hits and drove in two runs to drive the offense. Stefan Welch, David Chester, and Derrik Gibson all had doubles.

In the other half of their doubleheader, a makeup of last night's scheduled contest, Portland downed the Rock Cats, 4-2. Luis Diaz picked up the win thanks to seven strong innings of two-run baseball, allowing five hits and a walk while striking out six. Sean Coyle drove in all four of Portland's runs thanks, in part, to a first inning, two-run home run. Peter Hissey was the only other Sea Dog with more than one hit as he went 3 for 3 with a double.

Salem survived a late scare to beat the Carolina Mudcats (CLE), 3-2. Pat Light dominated Carolina, holding them to one run on three hits and two walks across six innings pitched to notch his third win of the year. After Madison Younginer allowed one run in two innings, Dayan Diaz notched the save despite allowing two walks and a hit in one inning of work. Only four Red Sox managed hits and both Jantzen Witte and Aneury Tavarez collected two, with Tavarez adding a triple.

The Greenville Drive were on the wrong end of a walk off, falling to the Augusta GreenJackets (SF), 6-5. Teddy Stankiewicz pitched well, throwing seven strong innings, allowing three runs on five hits while striking out four. Jonathan Aro blew the save and took the loss as he allowed three unearned runs in the bottom half of the ninth inning thanks to three errors by Tzu-Wei Lin in the inning. Three players collected two hits in the contest, including a double and a triple off the bat of Carlos Asuaje. Wendell Rijo and Kevin Mager were the other two players to have two hits.

The Lowell Spinners fell to the Tri-City ValleyCats (HOU), 9-4. Heri Quevedo struggled out of the gate, allowing eight runs on seven hits and five walks in just 4 1/3 innings pitched. Quevedo allowed at least one run in each of the first five innings. Nick Longhi collected two hits for Lowell while five other Spinners had one hit apeice, including Danny Mars, who continues his blistering start to the year.

The GCL Red Sox downed the GCL Twins (MIN), 3-0. Javier Rodriguez struggled with his control, allowing only one hit in four innings, but walking six along the way. Yankory Pimentel and Keivin Heras combined for five shut out innings out of the bullpen, allowing two hits between them. While Michael Chavis went hitless in his professional debut, Rafael Devers continued his blistering start, going 2 for 4 with a double.

The DSL Red Sox scored one in the ninth to beat the DSL Giants (SF), 2-1 despite being out hit 5-2. Gerson Bautista got the start and pitched well, allowing one run on three hits in four innings. Algenis Martinez got the win, throwing the final five innings, shutting down the Giants and allowing only two hits. Luis Alexander Basabe and Yoan Aybar were the only Sox to pick up hits, both doubles in the first inning.

Player of the Night: Despite strong performances all over the board, Pat Light takes home the honors. The 2012 first-rounder had struggled since his promotion to Salem, scuffling to a 5.92 ERA in 13 games started for Salem. This marks Light's second win in a row, as he dominated the Wilmington Blue Rocks (KC) in his last outing.
