Cup of Coffee: Devers leads the way in GCL doubleheader split

Allen Webster turned in another solid outing as the PawSox struck down the Columbus Clippers (CLE), 5-3 in 10 innings. Webster tossed seven innings, allowing two runs on seven hits and four walks, punching out six. Miguel Celestino picked up his first Triple-A save, despite allowing a home run in the bottom of the tenth. The Clippers were 0 for 9 with runners in scoring position, leaving ten men on base.
Andres Torres and Travis Shaw each homered for Pawtucket. Alex Hassan and Jonathan Herrera both had two hits to lead the PawSox offense. Will Middlebrooks was 1 for 4 with an RBI double.

Portland's game against the Binghamton Mets (NYM) was postponed due to rain. The two teams will play a doubleheader this evening.

After rallying to tie the game in the middle innings, Salem was clipped by the Frederick Keys (BAL), 7-6 in 10 innings. Cody Kukuk hurled the first two innings for the Red Sox, allowing two runs on five hits and a walk. William Cuevas followed with 4 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on seven hits and three walks. Kyle Martin received the loss despite allowing just one run on four hits and a walk in 3 1/3 innings of relief.
Matty Johnson had a strong night from the leadoff spot, going 2 for 3 with two triples, two walks and three RBI. Mike Miller and Jordan Weems each had three hits in the loss.

For the second straight day, Greenville lost in walk-off fashion to the Charleston RiverDogs (NYY), 4-3 . Daniel McGrath tossed the first five innings for the Drive, allowing three runs on six hits and four walks, striking out four. Jonathan Aro added three innings of scoreless relief, allowing just three hits while striking out three.
Greenville had just three hits the entire game, being aided by two RiverDogs errors. Jimmy Rider was 1 for 2 with a key two RBI single. Carlos Asuaje also added a hit, to extend his hitting streak to five games.

Lowell fell victim to a ninth inning rally as they lost in walk-off fashion to the Vermont Lake Monsters (OAK), 5-4. Kevin McAvoy made his professional debut, tossing two innings, allowing two hits and punching out one. Rob Smorol received the loss for allowing two runs on two hits and two walks in 1 2/3 innings of relief.
Jordan Betts remained hot, going 2 for 4 with a home run and two RBI. Raymel Flores went 3 for 4 with a double in the loss.

The DSL Red Sox pounded out 14 hits in a 13-5 victory over the DSL Rockies (COL). Enmanuel De Jesus picked up the victory for his five innings of work, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits and a walk, striking out four. Alejandro Rodriguez made his professional debut, tossing a scoreless inning of relief.
Luis Alexander Basabe was 2 for 4 with a triple and an RBI from the leadoff spot. Carlos Tovar, Rolandi Baldwin, Gerardo Carrizalez and Jose Lozada all had two hits. Samuel Miranda went 2 for 2 a double and 4 RBI.

In game one of a doubleheader, the GCL Sox fell to the GCL Rays (TB), 6-4. Dedgar Jimenez allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits and a walk in four innings as the starter. Pat Goetze fell to 0-2 as he allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits in his three innings of relief.
Rafael Devers (pictured,above) led the way with a 2 for 3 showing, picking up an RBI.
In game two, the GCL Sox earned the split, topping the Rays 5-3. Ty Buttrey hurled three innings, allowing a run on two hits and a walk. Luis Ramos picked up the victory thanks to his two innings of relief, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks. Kuehl McEachern earned his second save of the season.
Devers went 1 for 3 with a three run home run in the first inning. Michael Chavis collected his first professional hit and went 2 for 3 with a double.

Player of the Day: No matter what the level, Rafael Devers continues to swing a hot bat. The 17-year-old had another big day on Tuesday, going 3 for 6 with a home run and four RBI in a doubleheader. Since joining the GCL Sox, Devers has gone 9 for 14 with three doubles, a triple and a home run, knocking in seven. On the season, he is hitting a combined .373/.472/.619 with four home runs and 28 RBI in 29 games.
