Cup of Coffee: Rain halts three affiliates, Greenville falls again

Pawtucket's game against the Rochester Red Wings (MIN) was postponed due to a combination of rain and snow. The contest will be made up today as the second game of a doubleheader. Brandon Workman will make his 2014 Triple-A debut against left-hander Scott Diamond.

Portland's game against the Binghamton Mets (NYM) was postponed due to rain. The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader on May 21st.

Salem's contest against the Carolina Mudcats (CLE) was postponed due to rain. The game will be made up today as a part of a doubleheader beginning at 5 PM.

In the only action of the day, Greenville dropped its second straight to the Charleston RiverDogs (NYY), 6-2. Drive starter Jamie Callahan dropped to 0-2 after allowing five runs on eight hits and three walks in 3 1/3 innings. Sergio Gomez followed Callahan, allowing one run on six hits, striking out six in 4 2/3 innings.
Down 5-0 in the fourth, Greenville got on the board on a Manuel Margot RBI ground out. In the eighth, Jantzen Witte scored on a wild pitch to give the Drive its final run of the contest. Greenville would only muster four hits, two of which came from Witte, who went 2 for 4 with a double and a run scored.
Charleston collected 15 hits but was just 6 for 20 with runners in scoring position, leaving 12 men on base.

Player of the Day: Jantzen Witte (pictured, above) was one of the few bright spots on an otherwise rain soaked day of baseball action. The 24-year-old infielder was 2 for 4 with a double and a run scored in Greenville's 6-2 loss to Charleston. After a disappointing 2013 season with Short-Season A Lowell, Witte has gotten off to a solid start in 2014. Splitting time between first and third base, Witte has hit .297/.378/.405 with four doubles and four RBI. In six games at Fluor Field, Witte has hit .471/.565/.705 with all four of his doubles and three RBI.
