De La Rosa, Holt optioned to Triple-A; Snyder reassigned

The Red Sox announced three roster moves on Thursday, as the roster begins to take shape for the 2014 season. Infielder Brock Holt and pitcher Rubby De La Rosa (pictured) were optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket, and infielder Brandon Snyder was reassigned to minor league camp. 

As part of the move, the Red Sox also announced that De La Rosa will work as a starter with Pawtucket. The hard-throwing right-hander was acquired in the 2012 mega-deal with the Dodgers and started in 20 of his 24 appearances with the PawSox last season. However, all 11 of his major league outings came out of the bullpen, and there was a question as to what role the team would give him this season. 

The Holt move came as Jonathan Herrera won the role as backup infielder on the major league squad. Manager John Farrell cited Herrera's ability to play shortstop as a key factor. While Holt has some experience at the position, appearing in 32 games there with Pawtucket in 2013, he played only second and third base during his time in the majors. 

Snyder will once again join Holt on the Pawtucket infield. The 27-year-old Snyder was re-signed to a minor league deal after hitting .261/.332/.454 with the PawSox and going 9 for 50 in a trio of stints in the majors. 

The moves leave the team with 40 players in camp. That number includes pitchers Steven Wright and John Ely, who will begin the season on the disabled list.
