Bradley, Britton, Lavarnway optioned to Pawtucket

The Red Sox announced a number of roster moves today, optioning outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. (pictured), infielder Ryan Lavarnway, and pitcher Drake Britton to Triple-A Pawtucket.

With Grady Sizemore being named the opening day center fielder, the organization felt that Bradley would be best served getting regular at-bats in Pawtucket. Manager John Farrell spoke about the importance of getting Bradley into a groove with regular playing time, hoping to spark the 23-year-old's bat after a disappointing spring that saw him hit just .158/.213/.263 in 57 at-bats.

Lavarnway, 26, played well during spring training, hitting .306/.375/.500 with two home runs and five RBI. Seeing time both behind the plate and at first base during the spring, Lavarnway will likely continue to split time between the two positions in Pawtucket. 2014 will be a pivotal season for Lavarnway, as he is entering his final option year.

Britton, 23, spent the latter half of 2013 with Boston after spending the vast majority of the season with Double-A Portland. The left-hander started 2013 as a starter, but pitched solely in relief for Boston, compiling a 3.86 ERA in 18 relief appearances. This spring, Britton has struggled in five appearances, allowing seven runs on 11 hits in 8 2/3 innings. Like Lavarnway, 2014 will be Britton's final option year. With Britton beginning the season in Pawtucket, the last spot in the Boston bullpen seems to be firmly in the hands of Brandon Workman.
