David Renfroe retiring from baseball
Renfroe, drafted in the third round of the 2009 amateur draft, was a prized two-way, multi-sport athlete who was signed away from a commitment to the University of Mississippi with a $1.4-million bonus. Deciding to be an everyday player as a professional, Renfroe made his debut in 2010 with the Short-Season A Lowell Spinners, transitioning to third base after being a shortstop his entire high school career. In his debut season, the right-handed hitting Renfroe hit just .190/.267/.260 with two home runs and 13 RBI in 58 games.
The majority of the next two seasons, Renfroe was a member of the Low-A Greenville Drive, hitting .256/.330/.417 with 10 home runs and 64 RBI during his best season as a professional in 2012. Renfroe spent the end of 2012 and part of the 2013 season with Salem, before heading down to Fort Myers mid-season to begin a conversion to pitching. He continued this conversion during the Fall Instructional League this offseason, but it appears that did not work out.
