Gary DiSarcina named Baseball America Minor League Manager of the Year
Outgoing Pawtucket Red Sox manager Gary DiSarcina has been named the 2013 Baseball America Minor League Manager of the Year. The 46-year-old native of Malden, Mass. guided the PawSox to an 80-63 record and a return to the Governor's Cup finals. After the season, DiSarcina left the Red Sox organization to become the third base coach with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, the team where he spent his entire 12-year major league playing career.
An alumni of UMass Amherst and Billerica (MA) Memorial High School, DiSarcina returned to the Red Sox organization in 2013 after two years in the Angels front office. He previously managed the Short Season A Lowell Spinners from 2007 to 2009, and acted as the Red Sox roving minor league infield coordinator in 2010.
DiSarcina's win is the second time a manager in the Red Sox organization has been given the award, joining Butch Hobson, who led the PawSox in 1991. Hobson took over the Boston job the following year, leading the Red Sox for three seasons. Fellow future Red Sox managers Kevin Kennedy (Albuquerque Dukes in 1990), Grady Little (Greenville Braves in 1992), and Terry Francona (Birmingham Barons, 1993) won the award as they were climbing the managerial ladder with other organizations.
