Fall/Winter League Roundup: Cecchini shines in AFL All-Star Game

The Puerto Rican Winter League began action this week as an increasing amount of Red Sox prospects made impacts in leagues around the globe. Additionally, two top prospects were highlighted in Saturday's Arizona Fall League All-Star contest. This week's roundup covers the period of October 28-November 3.

Arizona Fall League:

The Surprise Saguaros went 3-1-1 this week, and hold a three and a half game lead in the AFL Western Division.  Mookie Betts appeared in two games this week, going 1 for 9 with a run scored and three stolen bases. Betts also appeared in the AFL All-Star game, starting at second base, going 0 for 1 with a walk and a run scored. Fellow infielder Garin Cecchini (pictured) has cooled off as of late, going 0 for 7 with two walks in two games this week. Cecchini joined Betts in the AFL All-Star game, going 1 for 2 with a solo home run in the eighth inning. The West Stars defeated the East Stars, 9-2. 

Travis Shaw had the best week of any Red Sox AFL participant, going 3 for 7 with a double, home run and four RBI.  Derrik Gibson continued to struggle at the plate, going 1 for 8 with four runs scored in three appearances this week. 

It was a quiet week for Red Sox pitchers, as the team only had five contests due to the All-Star break. Noe Ramirez threw a scoreless inning of relief, striking out two. Keith Couch allowed two runs on five hits in a 2 inning relief appearance against Salt River on Halloween. Mickey Pena picked up the victory on Friday against Scottsdale, going 5 innings, allowing one run on three hits and three walks, striking out five. 

Venezuelan Winter League:

Mario Martinez struck out in his lone at-bat for Lara. 

Mexican Pacific League:

Terry Doyle received the start for Mexicali on Wednesday, turning in an impressive outing against Navojoa. Doyle tossed 6 innings, allowing just one run on six hits and three walks, punching out nine in a no decision. 

Mark Hamilton went 4 for 17 with a double, home run, three RBI and three runs scored in six contests this week. 

Jesus Loya continued to play sparingly, collecting a single in his lone at-bat of the week. Loya has primarily been entering games as a defensive replacement. 

Dominican Winter League:

Bryce Brentz was 1 for 9 with a run scored, RBI, and two walks in four games this week. 

Dan Butler found his way into two games, going 2 for 6 with 3 RBI. 

Jonathan Diaz was also 2 for 6, scoring four runs and collecting an RBI in three games played.

J.C. Linares went 1 for 11 with a home run, stolen base, and two runs scored in three games. 

Chris Martin continued to be a force out of the bullpen, collecting a save while pitching 2 2/3 scoreless innings of relief. 

Rafael Perez tossed a scoreless inning of relief in his lone outing this week.

Allen Webster received the start on October 30 against Este. Webster hurled 3 2/3 innings pitched, allowing four runs on four hits and three walks, striking out three.

Puerto Rican (Roberto Clemente) Baseball League:

Henry Ramos was 1 for 7 with a solo home run in two games for Ponce.

Christian Vazquez went 2 for 7 with a double and a run scored in two games for Santurce. 

Venezuelan Liga Paralela:

Action for Liga Paralela began on October 10th, with the majority of the Red Sox contingent playing for the "Boston" squad. Pablo Urena has continued to hit well, batting .324 with three home runs in 35 at-bats. Jose Vinicio has also been strong at the plate, hitting .432 with a home run in 37 at-bats.
