With Sean Coyle to DL, Aneury Tavarez joins Salem for playoffs

Turns out, Aneury Tavarez is going to the postseason after all.

After spending all of 2013 with Low A Greenville, Tavarez, who played mostly right field for the Drive in 2013, will join the Salem Red Sox for their Carolina League playoff run. He is not in the lineup for Wednesday's Game 1 of the Southern Division Championship Series.

In 125 games this season, Tavarez hit .257 while getting on base at a .295 clip and slugging .388. His 28 doubles were a team-high, and his 55 RBI were second only to David Chester, who was promoted to Salem in late July.

Tavarez is filling the roster spot vacated by Salem second baseman Sean Coyle, who is headed back to the disabled list, all but ending a once-promising season ravaged by elbow trouble.

Coyle got off to a hot start, hitting .248/.309/.517 with 10 homers and 20 RBI through his first two months, only to land on the DL at the end of May. He didn't return to Salem until mid-August, and in 12 games since he started at second base exactly once — supplanted by Mookie Betts — while serving as the designated hitter in the other contests. Coyle had not played since Thursday.

While accruing 50 at-bats in those dozen games, Coyle hit .220 with a .355 OBP and .500 slugging percentage, bolstered by four long balls.
