Righties Matty Ott, Bobby Lanigan join Portland
Aside from saying so long to outfielder Brandon Jacobs, the Portland Sea Dogs made a pair of other moves Friday — the addition of right-handers Matty Ott and Bobby Lanigan, both of whom made their debuts in the Sea Dogs' 8-5, 15-inning win Friday night.
Lanigan, a 2008 draftee who signed as a minor league free agent after spending most of his professional career in the Twins organization, got through two scoreless before Binghamton plated a pair to tie things at five. In all, Lanigan allowed a pair of runs on three hits and two walks in three innings of work. He also struck out three and threw about 60 percent of his pitches for strikes (37 of 62).
It was a successful debut for the 6-foot-1, 190-pounder who had been having a strong season with Salem before his promotion. His 3.59 ERA and 1.22 WHIP weren't quite indicative of how well he was pitching of late. Since the beginning of June, Ott had posted a 2.52 ERA (seven earned in 25 innings) and 0.88 WHIP while keeping up his average of about one strikeout per inning.
Lanigan, who is in his second season as a full-time reliever, comes over having pitched all but one of his 24 games in 2013 with Double-A New Britain (he picked up a save during a one-game stint with Triple-A Rochester in late April). He owns a 3.34 ERA and 1.61 WHIP in 32 1/3 innings, but with a 5.3 K/9 rate and 1.46 K/BB mark, he isn't exactly blowing batters away.
