Cup of Coffee: Bogaerts, Owens terrific on Tuesday

6/26 Cup of Coffee: It was a strong night on the farm, as a combination of good pitching and great hitting allowed the affiliates to win four of the five games played on Tuesday. Young stars Xander Bogaerts and Henry Owens (pictured) stood out, while Brandon Workman continued to carve up the International League.

Behind another strong start from Brandon Workman, the PawSox pummeled the Toledo Mud Hens (DET), 16-3. Workman went the first six innings, allowing two runs on seven hits, while walking one and striking out five. Workman has been a model of consistency this year. He has not allowed more than three runs in any of his last eight starts, including his first four in Triple-A.

Xander Bogaerts has not hit for a high average during his short time in Triple-A, but he has shown plenty of power. He hit his fourth home run in 12 games last night, raising his season total to 10 in 68 games. He also made a tremedous play in the field. Jackie Bradley, Jr. also went deep for the PawSox, raising his triple slash to .309/.407/.511 with the team. Every Pawtucket player had at least one hit, and Alex Hassan continued his hot start by going 4 for 5 with three runs scored.

The Portland game was suspended in the second inning due to rain. The game will resume tomorrow at 5:00 PM.

Propelled by some of Boston's top prospects, Salem was able to defeat the Winston-Salem Dash (CWS), 7-0. The star of the game was Henry Owens, who had one of the best starts of his professional career. He went a career-high seven innings, allowing three hits and one walk, while striking out six. It was the fifth time this season he did not allow a run, and the third time in the last four games. Red Sox General Manager Ben Cherington was in attendance to witness Owens' terrific start.

On offense, Brandon Jacobs led the way with three hits to raise his average to .228. Blake Swihart went 2 for 4 with a double and a walk, Matthew Gedman and David Renfroe each went 2 for 4 with a walk, and Nick Natoli went 2 for 5 with a double.

Thanks to a balanced offensive attack, the Greenville Drive beat the Charleston RiverDogs (NYY), 9-1. Seven players had a multi-hit game for the Drive, led by Mario Martinez and Kevin Heller, who each had three hits. Martinez added a double and a home run, and Heller also drew a walk. Anuery Tavarez connected on his fourth home run of the season, and Jose Vinicio went 2 for 4 with two doubles.

Luis Diaz picked up his second victory of the season, tossing six innings and allowing only one run on five hits with six strikeouts. Raynel Velette and Manuel Rivera combined to throw three shutout innings in relief to seal the win.

Lowell was rained out in Vermont. The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader on July 28.

The GCL Red Sox moved to 2-0 at JetBlue Park, defeating the GCL Orioles (BAL), 3-1. Keivin Heras was very good, allowing only three baserunners in four innings and striking out two without allowing a run. Edwar Garcia threw three hitless innings of relief, and then former catcher Oscar Perez picked up his first career save after allowing one run in two innings.

Mark Hamilton, Bryan Hudson and Jantzen White all went 2 for 4, with Hudson and White adding a double. Shortstop Raymel Flores was moved up to the number two spot in the order, and he responded by drawing two walks and stealing a base.

-----

On a 99-degree day, the DSL Red Sox fell to the DSL Mariners (SEA), 3-2. Dedgar Jimenez was the tough-luck loser, allowing only an unearned run in four innings, while giving up two hits and striking out three. Enfember Martinez surrendered two runs in four innings in relief of Jimenez. Jhon Nunez went 2 for 4, and Isaias Lucena laced a two-run double to bring the Red Sox within one run in the seventh.

Player of the Day: It was a strong night on the farm, with many deserving candidates. Henry Owens gets the nod here for his seven shutout innings, surrendering only three hits, while striking out six. In his last 27 2/3 innings, Owens has given up only three runs, with 15 hits, 12 walks and 31 strikeouts. The lanky left-hander has now logged 73 innings with Salem, striking out 86 batters with an ERA of just 2.71.
