Red Sox trade Graham Godfrey to Pirates
The Red Sox have traded PawSox right-hander Graham Godfrey to the Pittsburgh Pirates for cash considerations, the club announced. He was assigned to Triple-A Indianapolis, the team Pawtucket lost to yesterday in extra innings.
Acquired by Boston from Oakland in December, Godfrey pitched 42 1/3 innings with the PawSox this season while serving as a piggyback starter for Rubby De La Rosa, a spot starter and a reliever. He had a 3.83 ERA with 30 strikeouts to 19 walks.
Godfrey has logged 46 innings in the major leagues, spanning from 2011 and 2012 when he pitched for the Athletics, with an ERA of 5.09.
This trade continues a trend of former Red Sox players seeing their careers move to the Pirates organization. The Red Sox and Pirates have now made 12 trades since 2008.
Including Godfrey, the Indianapolis Indians now have five former Red Sox farmhands (Jerry Sands, Kris Johnson, Oscar Tejeda, Ivan De Jesus). Former Red Sox prospect Stolmy Pimental is currently with the Altoona Curve, the Pirates' Double-A affiliate, and, of course, Mark Melancon is currently dominating in the Pirates bullpen (0.93 ERA with 29 strikeouts in 29 innings pitched).
