Michael Flacco announces retirement
First baseman Michael Flacco has announced his retirement from baseball, reports Salem Red Sox announcer Evan Lepler. Flacco had been assigned to High A Salem, scheduled to open its season this evening against the Frederick Keys.
Flacco, 26, was acquired in March from Baltimore for a player to be named later. A 31st round draft pick of the Orioles in the 2009 draft, Flacco showed solid plate discipline, but failed to develop the power that his 6-foot-6, 225 pound frame projected.
The brother of Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco, it was rumored during the offseason that Michael Flacco was considering a switch to a football career.
