Jonathan Hee announces retirement

Jonathan Hee has retired from baseball, the Red Sox have announced. Hee is a minor league veteran who appeared in over 400 games in the Red Sox system.

Hee, 27, was originally drafted by the Red Sox in the 21st round of the 2008 draft out of the University of Hawaii, where he won the Gold Glove as the best shortstop in Division I. While his defensive pedigree was outstanding, he was used more as a utility player during his Red Sox tenure, playing more at each of the three infield positions than he did at short.

After over 1,500 plate appearances across parts of six seasons, Hee retires with a career .241/.331/.322 line. His best season was 2011 with Portland, where he hit .275/.362/.390 with 26 doubles and four home runs. While Hee was never known for his power, he possessed very good plate discipline and contact skills. 

Hee began 2013 with Pawtucket, and went 1 for 4 in two games before and was placed on the disabled list with turf toe. before deciding to call it a career. His retirement leaves the Red Sox with only eight players left in the organization from the 2008 draft.
