Cup of Coffee: Workman solid, Vitek leads offense in Sea Dog victory

In the home opener at McCoy Stadium, Jose Iglesias returned with a bang, helping Pawtucket to a 5-4 victory over the Rochester Red Wings (MIN). Iglesias hit a two-run home run in his second plate appearance, matching his long ball output in 353 at-bats last year with the PawSox. David Ortiz got the start at designated hitter in his first appearance of his rehab assignment. Ortiz went 2 for 3, and most importantly, he ran the bases with no issue. Drew Sutton and Justin Henry added two hits apiece.
Starter Chris Hernandez allowed only two runs on four hits, but was removed after reaching 84 pitches in only 4 2/3 innings. Manager Gary Disarcina confirmed after the game that he was taken out due to pitch count rather than any injury and said the lefty would need to be more efficient in the future. Jose De La Torre picked up the win in relief. Ryan Rowland-Smith and Anthony Carter each added a scoreless frame, with Carter notching his first save of the season.

The Portland bats came alive in support of Brandon Workman, and Portland knocked off the New Britain Rock Cats 9-3. Every Sea Dogs batter reached base in the romp. Kolbrin Vitek (pictured) led the barrage, going 4 for 5 with a double, two runs scored, and two RBI. Both hits for Tony Thomas went for extra bases, as he belted a third-inning double and an eighth-inning home run. That was more than enough support for Workman, who earned his second victory of the year. The right-hander cruised through six innings, giving up two runs on three hits, walking only one while striking out seven. Daniel Bard pitched a scoreless seventh, allowing a pair of hits and striking out one.

The game between Greenville and the Lexington Legends was postponed due to rain and will be made up as part of a doubleheader today at 5:00 p.m.

Player of the Day: Kolbrin Vitek led the Sea Dogs' offensive outburst with a four-hit night. The Red Sox first round pick in the 2010 draft is 5 for 14 on the young season, an encouraging start as he attempts to rebound from a 2012 season marred by injuries.
