Red Sox sign Matt Maloney to minor league deal

Maloney, 29, pitched for the Minnesota organization in 2012 before undergoing Tommy John surgery on July 17. He split time between the major league squad, where he made nine relief appearances allowing 10 runs on 17 hits in 11 innings, and Triple-A Rochester. Given that he is still recovering from surgery, Maloney will almost certainly begin the season in extended spring training.
Overall, Maloney has appeared in 31 games spread across the last four seasons with the Cincinnati Reds and the Twins, compiling a 5.74 ERA and 1.47 WHIP. Primarily a starting pitcher in the minors, he has split time between the rotation and bullpen in the majors. Originally drafted in the third round of the 2005 draft by Philadelphia, Maloney went to Cincinnati in the 2007 deal for pitcher Kyle Lohse.

Maloney's best season came in 2009 with the Reds, where he had a 3.00 ERA across two minor league levels before getting the call and making seven starts in the majors. Despite continued strong performances at Triple-A, he struggled in his trials in Cincinnati. After being waived following the 2011 season, he was claimed by Minnesota.
A control specialist, Maloney has walked only 2.5 batters per nine innings in his minor league career. He has been even more stingy with the free pass in his major league trials, walking less than two batters per nine. His difficulties at the major league level have been related to the home run ball, giving up 20 in 91 innings.
