Red Sox agree to terms with pitcher Ryan Rowland-Smith
According to Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com, the Red Sox have agreed to terms on a minor league deal with pitcher Ryan Rowland-Smith. The left-hander last pitched in the majors in 2010.
Rowland-Smith, 30, was signed as an amateur free agent in 2000 by the Seattle Mariners, the only club with which he has seen major-league action. In 115 games with the team, he compiled a 12-17 record with a 4.57 ERA, replete with a 5.5 K/9 and a 3.6 BB/9.
Last season, Rowland-Smith threw 77 2/3 innings with the Triple-A Iowa Cubs of the Pacific Coast League, posting a 3.94 ERA with 62 strikeouts and 41 walks.
The lefty is currently preparing to play in the World Baseball Classic as a member of the Australian team. He will likely be competing for a spot in the Pawtucket bullpen, which is looking right-hander heavy.
