Red Sox receive right-hander Kaminska to complete Stewart trade
Capping off a busy day, the Red Sox received right-handed pitcher Kyle Kaminska to complete their prior trade of Zach Stewart to the Pittsburgh Pirates.
After being drafted in 2007 by the Marlins, Kaminska had spent his entire career in that organization before being traded to Pittsburgh at this year's trade deadline along with first baseman Gaby Sanchez in exchange for outfielder Gorkys Hernandez and a draft pick. For the season, Kaminska pitched 81 2/3 innings, striking out 66 and walking just 11 batters, allowing 98 hits.
Kaminska spent most of the year as a reliever, but made his final four as a starter, going down to High A Bradenton for three of those and coming back up to Altoona for a single start to close the year. In those four starts, he allowed just four runs over 22 innings, allowing 16 hits and two walks while striking out 15. His success foreshadowed a solid campaign in the Arizona Fall League as a starter, as he pitched 28 innings over six starts, going 3-1 with a 1.61 ERA and striking out 21 compared to four walks. It is unknown if the Red Sox will continue transitioning him back into a starting role, which he had not done since missing a good chunk of the 2010 season due to injury. Boston did announce that Kaminska had been assigned to Pawtucket, but at this point of the offseason, that assignment is essentially meaningless.
