2012 Season in review: There’s no need to be alarmed by Jamie Callahan’s 5.19 ERA with the Gulf Coast League Red Sox. The small sample size of five games does not reflect why the Red Sox selected him in the second round of the 2012 draft. His high school numbers—a 0.89 ERA with 113 strikeouts over 50 innings—are more indicative of his potential. Although he was committed to the University of South Carolina, Callahan signed for a bonus of $600,000.

2013 Outlook: Callahan is remarkably young for his draft class: he will be 18 years old for nearly the entire 2013 season. That being said, it is difficult to place him at this point because it will probably be contingent on his performance in spring training. Given his age, the will most likely head to Lowell following extended spring training; as Chris Mellen noted in getting his first look at Callahan at Fall Instructs, his delivery could use some clean-up, a process best done in extended before moving on to the bright lights of an affiliate assignment.

2012 Season in Review: Montas spent nearly his entire season with the Gulf Coast League Red Sox, receiving an end-of-the-season promotion to Lowell, where he appeared in one game. Montas appeared in 12 games for the GCL Red Sox, starting nine, and he put up solid numbers. In his 40 2/3 innings, Montas struck out an impressive 41 batters while only walking 12, posting a WHIP of 1.13. Montas showed remarkable improvement from his 2011 campaign with the DSL Red Sox, in which he walked 12 batters in as many innings with an ERA of 4.26.

2013 outlook: After showing improvement across the board, Montas will likely transition to the Lowell Spinners next season. His ability to light up radar guns to the tune of 96-100 mph has made him one of the prospects in the system's lower levels with the potential to rise up the system's rankings, as already evinced by his jump to #23 following Chris Mellen's scouting trip to Fall Instructs. The 20-year-old’s mechanics are still raw, and he needs to refine his secondary pitches. However, there is still plenty of room for improvement. He will almost certainly continue his development in Lowell, although an aggressive assignment to Greenville would not be completely out of the question, particularly if the Red Sox think moving him to the bullpen now would accelerate his development.
