Fall/Winter League Roundup: October 15-21
During the offseason, we will run recaps of the Fall and Winter Leagues each Monday. Also make sure to follow our Fall/Winter League page, with statistics updated daily.
Arizona Fall League
The Red Sox delegation played a big role in helping the Surprise Saguaros to a 5-1 record on the week. Michael Almanzar reached base in each of the four games he appeared, scoring five runs on the week. In Saturday's 16-10 slugfest victory over Mesa, he reached base three times, on a double, walk and hit by pitch, scoring two runs and driving in another pair. Christian Vazquez reached base eight times in twelve plate appearances across three games on the week. Bryce Brentz saw limited action, going 1 for 4 in Monday's contest.
The quartet of Red Sox pitchers combined for an stellar 0.84 ERA on the week. Pete Ruiz gave up the lone run in his 3 innings of work, while Brock Huntzinger (2 innings), Ryan Pressly (3), and Chris Martin (2 1/3) were all unscored upon.
Venezuelan Winter League
Yeiper Castillo made two appearances out of the bullpen for Aguilas del Zulia, allowing two runs on four hits in 4 innings of work, striking out four and walking just one. Ronald Bermudez saw most of his playing time for Leones del Caracas in a pinch running and defensive replacement role, but did reach base in both of his plate appearances.
Mexican Winter League
Jeremy Hazelbaker (pictured) homered in consecutive games for Yaquis de Obregon, with a solo blast on Wednesday and a two-run shot on Thursday. Unfortunately, that was all of the offense Obregon would get in either game, and they lost both contests by one run. Overall, Hazelbaker finished the week 5 for 17 with a .647 slugging percentage.
Hazelbaker's Wednesday home run came off of his former Portland teammate Marco Duarte, who was otherwise excellent. Used as a reliever during the season, Duarte got the start for Mexicali, allowing just the one run in 4 innings, striking out six while walking just one.
Dominican Winter League
It was a tough week for the Red Sox affiliated bats on the week. Dan Butler, trying to earn a spot on the 40-man roster or showcase his talents for a potential Rule 5 selection, went 3 for 18, though two of those three hits went for doubles. After a 1 for 16 week, Mauro Gomez is now hitting .050 in his encore to a 2012 International League MVP award. Finally, Nate Spears, now a minor league free agent, went 1 for 12. Relief pitcher Josh Fields fared better in his lone appearance. Tossing a scoreless inning in Friday's contest, he allowed one hit and struck out two.
