Cup of Coffee: Arizona Fall League opener launches 2012 Fall/Winter season
10/10 Cup of Coffee: The Arizona Fall League kicked off on Tuesday with six of the seven Red Sox players on the Surprise Saguaros suiting up, along with members of the Royals, Mets, Cardinals, and Rangers. Position players Bryce Brentz, Michael Almanzar, and Christian Vazquez, as well as pitchers Brock Huntzinger, Chris Martin, Ryan Pressly, and Pete Ruiz will represent the Red Sox in Arizona, and all but Ruiz saw action. This year, the offseason Cup of Coffee will feature weekly recaps of all the action in the AFL and Caribbean Winter Leagues, so stay tuned.
As for the game itself, the Saguaros fell to the Peoria Javelinas, 5-2. Peoria scored all five runs off of Red Sox pitchers, with the Javelinas getting to Huntzinger and Martin for two runs apiece, while Pressly gave up an unearned run in his one inning of work. With Surprise down 3-0 in the seventh, Brentz led off the inning with a triple, and scored on a Darrell Ceciliani (NYM) sacrifice fly. The triple was Brentz's lone hit in four at-bats. Almanzar picked up where he left off in Salem, going 1 for 3 with a walk, while Vazquez went 0 for 4 with two strikeouts.
