Middlebrooks goes deep, but Scottsdale falls to Surprise

10/22 Cup of Coffee: A good day for Sox prospects did not lead to a win as the Surprise Saguaros slugged their way to a 13-8 victory.

Will Middlebrooks went 2 for 5 with a home run and 3 RBI's to lead the Scorpion offense. Every Scorpion collected at least 1 hit in the game, with Dan Butler and Cody Overbeck (PHI) each going 3 for 4 and Jean Segura (LAA) going 2 for 4. Alex Hassan had the roughest night of the Red Sox prospects, going 1 for 5 and striking out 3 times.

While the offense was solid for Scottsdale, the pitching was shoddy. Matt Purke (WAS) made his first start as a professional and it was one to forget. He recorded only 1 out and allowed 7 runs on 5 hits, a walk, and a hit by pitch. Brock Huntzinger managed to keep Scottsdale in the game by throwing 3.0 solid innings allowing only 1 hit and striking out 3. The pitch f/x system had him hitting 93 several times with his fastball which is up from where he was earlier in the regular season.

After being down 8-2 in the 2nd inning, the Scorpions managed to tie the game at 8 in the top of the 7th thanks to a Butler single, but a 5 run bottom of the 7th for Surprise put an end to the comeback. The Scorpions play tomorrow at 3:35 EST at Phoenix.
