Scottsdale defeats Javelinas to win AFL title

11/21 Cup of Coffee: In the championship game of the 2010 Arizona Fall League, it was a pair of Washington Nationals prospects who led the Scottsdale Scorpions to a 3-2 victory over the Peoria Javelinas on Saturday.

Peoria opened the scoring in the top of the second inning. Ryan Lavarnway led off the inning with a walk, and he came around to score on an errant throw from Charlie Culberson (SF), who was trying to turn a double play. The Scorpions would answer with two runs of their own in the bottom half of that inning, however. Jordan Pacheco (COL) knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly and highly-touted prospect Bryce Harper (WAS) scored another with a single to give the Scorpions a 2-1 lead. In the top of the fourth, Peoria would tie the game on another Culberson error, allowing Dustin Ackley (SEA) to score from second. With the score tied at 2 in the bottom of the fourth, Scottsdale scored the final and decisive run of the game on an RBI double from Steve Lombardozzi (WAS). Jason Rice would come on for Peoria in the bottom of the fifth. Although he walked two batters, he induced a double play to get out of the inning unscathed.

Lavarnway was 0-for-3 with a walk and a run scored. Jose Iglesias played short and was 0-for-4. Rice pitched a hitless fifth inning but did allow two walks.
