Rafters score two in the first, never look back

11/15 Cup of Coffee: The Surprise Rafters scored 2 runs in the first inning and cruised to a 2-1 victory behind excellent pitching performances.

Seth Garrison opened the game by giving up a double to the first batter, Adron Chambers (STL). After walking the next two batters to load the bases, Garrison was able to limit the damage, but still gave up 2 runs in the inning on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly. Daniel Turpen relieved Garrison and kept the game within reach for the Javelinas by pitching 2.0 scoreless innings. Another Red Sox reliever, Jason Rice, followed Turpen with 2.0 scoreless innings of his own. However, despite the Peoria bullpen blanking Surprise through the rest of the game, the offense was unable to score any runs until the ninth inning. Cord Phelps (CLE) hit a solo shot to lead off the last frame, and Jose Iglesias followed with a single. However, a double play hit into by Dustin Ackley (SEA) and a Ryan Lavarnway ground out would end the game with the Javelinas still trailing by a run.

Deuces were wild for Garrison, as he went 2.0 innings, giving up 2 earned runs on 2 hits and 2 walks, to go along with 2 strikeouts. Turpen followed Garrison with 2.0 scoreless innings, while scattering 3 hits. Rice picked up where Turpen left off with another 2.0 scoreless innings, while striking out 4. Iglesias finished the game 1 for 4. Lavarnway was also 1 for 4 in the game with a strikeout, while allowing the Rafters to steal 2 bases, both in the first inning. Juan Carlos Linares played center, and was 0 for 3.

The Javelinas travel to play their cross-town rivals, the Saguaros, today at 2:35 EST.
