Linares leads Javelinas to victory
11/6 Cup of Coffee: The Javelinas jumped out to an early lead and never looked back on Friday, as they took down the Peoria Saguaros 13-5.
Leading 1-0 in the bottom of the second, the Javelinas offense exploded off of Saguaros starting pitcher Erik Davis (SD). Dustin Ackley (SEA) knocked in two with a double and Koby Clemens (HOU) scored Ackley with a single. After another double, Juan Carlos Linares came up with a pair of runners on and hit a triple to center, scoring two. Linares came to the plate again in the next inning with the Javelinas already leading it 8-0, and smacked an RBI double to left. The Javelinas led 12-1 in the seventh when Linares came up with a man on third. He grounded out to short, but in doing so picked up his 4th RBI of the game. Leading 13-1 in the top of the ninth inning, the Javelinas called on Jason Rice for the final three outs. He struggled, however, and after a pair of singles and an error, Henry Wrigley (TB) came to the plate with the bases loaded and drilled a grand slam to left center. Rice was removed after just two-thirds of an inning. Alan Farina (TOR) came on for the final out.
Juan Carlos Linares was 2 for 5 with a double and a triple and 4 RBI. Jason Rice went 0.2 innings, allowing 4 runs (3 earned), 3 hits, a walk and a strikeout.
The Arizona Fall League Rising Stars game is on Saturday at 9:00 EST with Jose Iglesias and Ryan Lavarnway getting a chance to showcase their skills. The Javelinas, meanwhile, will return to action on Monday against Phoenix.
