Javelinas scorch Scorpions in a shootout
11/9 Cup of Coffee: Eammon Portice got the win for Peoria in a 16-8 shootout over the Pheonix Scorpions.
Phoenix opened the scoring with a run in the top of the third, but Peoria answered right back with 3 runs of their own in the bottom half. Jason Kipnis (CLE) opened the inning with a triple, followed by a Nate Tenbrink (SEA) RBI double, with Jose Iglesias grabbing an RBI on a sacrifice fly. Ryan Lavarnway drove in a run on a single for the last RBI in the third. The Javelinas followed that inning with another 3 runs in the fourth, including another triple by Kipnis and a 2-run homer by Tenbrink. Pheonix cut the deficit to 2, with 3 runs in the sixth. However, Peoria opened the game back up by hanging a crooked 9 on Pheonix in the bottom of the inning. Dustin Ackley (SEA), Lavarnway, and Brandon Barnes (HOU) each hit a home run in the inning. The Scorpions did not go away quietly though, scoring 3 runs off of Seth Garrison the next inning.
Iglesias finished the game 3 for 5 with a run scored, a double, and a walk. Lavarnway was 3 for 6 with a home run. He also allowed a passed ball in the game and a steal. Eammon Portice started the game, getting the win after going 3.0 innings while giving up a run on a hit and 2 walks to go along with a strikeout. Garrison had a rough outing, only lasting 0.1 innings, giving up 3 runs on 3 hits and 2 walks. Daniel Tupen pitched a scoreless ninth inning, allowing 1 walk while striking out a batter.
The Javelinas next face their cross-town Peoria rivals today at 9:35 EST.
