Boston hires Curt Young as pitching coach
The Boston Red Sox have formally announced the hiring of Curt Young as their next pitching coach.
The 50-year-old young replaces John Farrell, who was recently named manager of the Toronto Blue Jays. Young, who began his coaching career in 2000 as pitching coach for Double-A Midland in the Athletics system, has a stellar reputation for building great relationships with pitchers and having a knack for knowing how to exploit opposing hitters weaknesses. Serving as the pitching coach for Oakland from 2004-2010, his pitcher's have produced the lowest ERA in the American League (4.03), lowest batting average against (.257) as well as the fewest home runs allowed (1,062). In 2010, the Athletics pitching staff shined, leading the American League in hits allowed and earned runs while posting a Major League best 3.47 ERA.
Young pitched parts of 11 major league seasons with Oakland (1983-91, 93), Kansas City (1992), and the Yankees (1992). For his career, the left-handed Young went 69-53 with a 4.31 ERA in 251 appearances.
