Boston acquires Andrew Miller from Marlins for Richardson

The Red Sox have announced that they have acquired left-hander Andrew Miller from the Florida Marlins in exchange for pitcher Dustin Richardson.

Miller, 25, was originally drafted 6th overall by the Detroit Tigers in the 2006 amateur draft. He made his major league debut in August of the same year, pitching a scoreless inning of relief against the New York Yankees. After an up-and-down 2007 season, Miller was one of six players traded to the Marlins in exchange for Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis. He has since struggled with his control, evidenced by his 26 walks in 32.2 major league innings this past season. In parts of five seasons in the majors, he is 15-26 with a 5.84 ERA in 79 games (54 starts).

Richardson, 25, was originally drafted by the Red Sox in the fifth round of the 2006 amateur draft. After making his major league debut with Boston in 2009, Richardson appeared in 26 games of relief for the Red Sox this season, compiling a 4.15 ERA in 26 appearances. In parts of five minor league seasons, the left-hander has gone 25-21 with a 3.95 ERA in 142 outings.
