PawSox owner Ben Mondor passes away at 85
Pawtucket Red Sox owner Ben Mondor passed away peacefully in his home in Warwick Neck, R.I. on Sunday night at the age of 85.
Mondor, a local Rhode Island businessman, purchased the Pawtucket franchise in 1977 when it was nearly bankrupt. Along with longtime president Mike Tamburro, Mondor transformed the PawSox into one of the model organizations in all of minor league baseball, reinvigorating McCoy Stadium as well in the process.
"He was an incredible and charitable man who was first and foremost devoted to his wife Madeleine, along with his PawSox family and the entire community at large," the organization said in a statement.
