Caribbean Winter Leagues underway
Three of the four Caribbean Winter Leagues started up in the past week. The primary recognized Caribbean Winter Leagues are the Dominican Winter League, the Venezuelan Winter League, the Mexican Pacific League, and the Puerto Rican Winter League. Generally, younger prospects from those respective areas participate in those leagues, but a number of major leaguers and ex-major leaguers play as well. There are also a few other under-the-radar leagues, including the Colombian Winter League and the Nicaraguan Winter League. Here are the Sox players who will be participating during the 2008-09 off-season:
Venezuelan Winter League
Tiburones de La Guaira: Devern Hansack, Chris Carter, Carlos Fernandez
Tigres de Aragua: Tony Granadillo
Bravos de Margarita: Edgar Martinez
Caribes de Anzoategui: Jose Alvarez, Michael Tejera
Leones del Caracas: Zach Daeges, Jimmy James, Armando Zerpa, Juan Apodaca
Navegantes del Magallanes: Argenis Diaz
Dominican Winter League
Los Toros del Este: Dusty Brown, Sandy Madera
Leones del Escogido: Hunter Jones
Estrellas Orientales: Miguel Asencio
Gigantes del Cibao: Oscar Tejeda will practice with the team, not likely to see much (if any) active time
Tigres del Licey: Yamaico Navarro will practice with the team after the Hawaii Winter Baseball season is over, not likely to see much active time
Mexican Pacific League
None
Puerto Rican Winter League
