Pauley gets call to Boston
Right-hander David Pauley will make his major league debut for the Red Sox against Toronto on Wednesday in the place of the injured David Wells. Pauley, 22, will make the jump from Portland to Boston having never pitched above Double-A. He did make three spring training starts with Boston in 2006, where he failed to impress. However, he has been quite impressive so far this year in the Eastern League, going 2-3 with a 2.39 ERA, with 47 strikeouts and just 17 walks. Pauley throws a plus sinkerball along with a low 90s fastball, a decent curveball and a good change. He was acquired from San Diego in December 2004 along with Jay Payton, Ramon Vazquez, and cash for Dave Roberts. Boston placed Wells on the 15-day DL to make room for Pauley on the 25-man roster.
