In action on the first day of September, Pawtucket edged Syracuse 5-4. Mark Makaska went 5 innings allowing 0 runs on 1 hit. He had 6 Ks. Jack Cressend threw 3 innings giving up 2 runs on 4 hits. Cla Meredith pitched the ninth allowing 2 runs on 3 hits. George Lombard went 2 for 2 with a run scored. Portland clinched the Northern Division title by defeating Altoona 7-6. This win along with Trenton's loss gave the title to the Sea Dogs. Chris Smith went 4 innings giving up 5 runs on 9 hits. Conor Brooks pitched a scoreless 5th, Jimmy Mann threw a perfect 6th, Kyle Jackson pitched the 7th and 8th innings giving up a single run and Randy Beam pitched a perfect 9th to earn the save. Chris Durbin went 2 for 4 with a run scored and a RBI. Brandon Moss went 2 for 5. In the completion of Tuesday's suspended game, Salem beat Wilmington 16-7. Luis Mendoza who started the game on Tuesday had gone 2 innings allowing 2 runs. Travis Rios started the game last night and he gave up 7 runs on 9 hits in 2 innings. Kyle Tabeek went only 2/3 of an inning giving up 6 runs on 7 hits. Scott White went 3 for 5 with a home run. Jeff Ontiveros went 2 for 3 and actually pitched the last 1 1/3 innings allowing 1 run on 2 hits. In the second game, Salem shutout Wilmington 5-0 even though the Blue Rocks outhit Salem 11 to 4. Andrew Dobies went 5 1/3 innings giving up 3 runs on 3 hits. Dusty Brown went 3 for 4 while Ian Bladergroen was 2 for 4 with 2 home runs. Greenville split a doubleheader with Savannah. The Bombers won the first game 6-4. Gary Galvez went 5 innings allowing 3 runs on 9 hits. Tony Granadillo went 3 for 3 with a home run and 2 runs scored. Chris Turner went 2 for 3 with a run scored while Jeff Natale went 2 for 4 with a run scored and a RBI. In the second game, Savannah shutout the Bombers 5-0. Henry Cabrera threw 5 innings giving up 5 runs on 5 hits. Jeff Natale and Matt Ciaramella were both 1 for 3. Lowell crushed Vermont 8-1. They were led by the outstanding start of Clay Buchholz who threw 3 innings of scoreless ball giving up only 1 hit while striking out 8 batters. Jacoby Ellsbury went 4 for 5 with 2 runs scored. Yahmed Yema went 3 for 5. Jed Lowrie and Dustin Kelly were each 2 for 4.
Player of The Night: Although there were several deserving candidates for this honour tonight, Clay Buchholz gets the nod.
