Red Sox select Owen Hull with 67th overall pick

With the 67th overall pick in the 2026 MLB First-Year Player Draft, the Red Sox selected Owen Hull, an outfielder out of the University of North Carolina. Hull is ranked 60th in the draft class by Baseball America and 67th by MLB Pipeline.

The Red Sox have opened their 2026 draft with a pair of UNC hitters, going the outfield route with their pick in Competitive Balance Round B. After spending the first two seasons of his college career at George Mason University, Hull transferred to UNC for the 2026 season and had a stellar season with the Tarheels. In 69 games as a junior, Hull hit .393/.500/.615 with 27 doubles, 9 home runs, and 18 stolen bases. Like first-round pick Jake Schaffner, Hull was named to the First Team All-ACC.

Standing 6-foot-4 and 215 pounds, Hull brings a unique blend of size and athleticism. He stole 42 bases as a sophomore with George Mason and has well above-average speed in addition to strong instincts on the basepaths. Hull has strong contact skills and plate discipline, walking 48 times (14.8%) compared to only 49 strikeouts (15.1%) in his junior season. Some scouts have critiqued Hull’s bat speed and swing mechanics, noting that his swing can be rigid at times and that he tends to make hard contact on the ground rather than in the air. However, he posted excellent results with UNC and began to hit for more power later in the season. After primarily playing right field at George Mason, Hull moved to center field with UNC and his speed and arm give him a chance to stick there.

As a strong contact hitter with good size and athleticism but questions around his power output, Hull stands out as a prototype for college hitters the Red Sox have targeted under the Craig Breslow administration. The Red Sox have had a strong track record in developing hitters’ bat speed and exit velocity in recent years and will hope that Hull is another success story. The slot value for the 67th overall pick in this year’s draft is $1,320,000.
