Red Sox select Lucas Davenport with fifth-round pick
With the 156th overall pick in the 2026 MLB First-Year Player Draft, the Red Sox selected Lucas Davenport, a right-handed pitcher out of Baylor University. Davenport is unranked by both Baseball America and MLB Pipeline.
Davenport spent two seasons at Baylor after first making stops at Texas A&M and Blinn College (where he won the 2024 NJCAA Division I Junior College World Series). As a redshirt junior this past spring, the 22-year-old righty posted a 6.25 ERA with 69 strikeouts to 16 walks over 13 starts (63 1/3 innings) for the Bears. He earned All-Big 12 Honorable Mention honors.
Listed at 6-foot-6 and 230 pounds, Davenport gets big extension with a funky delivery that keeps hitters off balance. The native Texan operates with a 92-97 mph fastball, a mid-80s cutter, and a short slider. He fits the mold of pitcher the Red Sox have sought in recent drafts and is the first arm the club has taken off the board in this draft.
The slot value for the 156th overall pick in this year's draft is $454,100.
